DALE LAITINEN – Colorado Watercolor Society Watercolor Workshop

SHAPE-SHIFTING: EXPLORING THE WEST WITH YOUR BRUSH

The landscape of western North America is one of limitless possibilities presenting fertile ground for the artist’s brush. In this workshop we will explore this optimistic promise using our sketches, and colors.

In painting this promise we might find evergreen covered slopes with rocky spires that pierce blankets of snow. In the desert Southwest, we see and feel the spine of the earth with its boundless contours and windswept plains laid open to the shape-makers imagination. This is our aspiration.

Art Elements: line, shape, value, color, and texture are tools of art we employ to accomplish our goals. In this workshop we investigate the relationships of these art elements. We find our way to representational painting through the underlying abstract ideas found in making the connections between abstraction and representation. Throughout our painting experience we should find the two ideas are one in the same.

Composition: The design of our paintings determines how the viewer sees our subject. The way we use our art elements in composition takes us a long way to creating interesting and thought provoking paintings. This is the bedrock of our entire art piece.

Daily demonstrations/instruction cover: Sketching in sketchbooks and drawing on our painting surface. Creating strong design from our source material Using wide brushes for expressing freedom of shape Breaking free of object oriented painting. Paint shapes not things. Watercolor techniques relating to color layering and shape making. Use of some opaque areas over transparent passages.
