CAROLYN LORD
WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP
Plein Air Approach
to Watercolors
Carolyn Lord was introduced to plein air watercolor painting, and the bold color and strong design of the California Watercolor Style while a college student in the 1970’s. With further education and practice, she has integrated aspects of Tonalism and Impressionism into her current work.
Her paintings are represented by galleries in Northern and Southern California; Mt Carmel, Utah, and Crested Butte, Colorado. Lord is a Signature member of the National Watercolor Society; California Watercolor Association, California Art Club; and American Women Artists. She has served as a juror or judge for National Watercolor Society, Arizona Aqueous, Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolors, and most recently California Watercolor Association’s 54th National Exhibition. Lord participated in 2014 and 2023’s Crested Butte Plein Air, as an invited artist, and had a painting in the 50th Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition, in Evergreen.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
The portability and vibrancy of watercolor makes it ideal for plein air painting. I also know that in
Colorado, May can bring rain, hail, or snow! Planning for the unpredictable weather, the workshop will
use the projector and screen at The Curtis Center for the Arts to create a modified “plein air”
experience.
First Day: how to organize the watercolor palette; pigment selection; color perspective. Afternoon: painting demonstration: selecting motif; set-up of equipment; discussion of drawing, composition, strategies, light and shadow, block-in.
Second Day and Third Morning: students paint and receive individual instruction throughout the day. Expect to do at least 3 paintings.
Final Afternoon: painting demonstration either indoors or weather permitting, out-of-doors.
